GEV Academy Tour "Bauhaus and Beyond" to Germany
The adventure of discovering German modern art and architecture
February 12 - 19, 2010

In cooperation with the GEV Academy in Cairo, Egypt, CULTOURINARIA created and escorted a custom study trip to the original sites of the Bauhaus School for art, design and architecture in Germany.

From February 12th - 19th 2010, a group of 13 students from Cairo, Egypt, with majors in architecture or art went on a tailor-made educational and adventurous trip to discover modern German art and architecture - in the middle of a record winter in Germany with loads of snow - and fun!

The itinerary is exemplary and was designed to meet the special interest for this particular group:

Berlin: Guided walking tour through the historic centre of Berlin with the classic backyards "Hackesche Hoefe" with its galleries, shops, bars... - Guided Bauhaus tour by bus with estates designed by Bruno Taut and Mies van der Rohe - Modern new architecture in Berlin - Visit of the show "Umbilical Brothers Speedmouse" at the TIPI.

Dessau: Guided tour through the original Bauhaus School building and the Bauhaus Masters' Houses.

Leipzig: Guided tour through the centre for arts "Spinnerei" Leipzig, an old cotton spinning mill factory transformed into an amazing place for artists and craftsmen in residence with studios and galleries - Visit of Germany's biggest indoor ice rink - Leipzig's world famous remodeled Central Train Station.

Jena: Visit of Europe's oldest planetarium with a video and laser projection show.

Leuchtenburg: Visit of the impressive well-preserved Middle Age fortress Leuchtenburg in the Thuringian Forest, home of many Brothers Grimm fairy tales - Museum and hands-on fountain.

Weimar: Guided tour through the Bauhaus University Weimar with student's workshop and a special architecture models exhibit

Erfurt: Guided Bauhaus walking tour in the historic city center - Hands-on Bauhaus seminar at the Walter-Gropius-School Erfurt "Experimental studies with Paper" including certificates.

Along the trip we had several German language lessons to learn helpful everyday-life-vocabulary.

Of course, the students had plenty of time to go on individual excursions and for shopping! For every city, the student received a print-out with comprehensive information about architecturally interesting buildings, museums and galleries including directions, opening hours, special exhibits and more...
